Introduction
Gabe Lyons, in his book The Next Christians, says that research shows that over 76% of Americans self-identify as Christian. (p. 5) However, as he points out, finding that 76% is not easy. Perhaps this coincides with research reported in the book Unchristian, also co-authored by Lyons, in which it was stated that 87% of “young outsiders labeled Christians as judgmental.” (Ibid. p.32) What’s going on! There seems to be a disconnect between a profession and the Christian walk. Lyons suggests that part of the problem comes when Christians emphasize only a “half story”. God’s story isn’t confined to the fall and redemption. In fact he says, “Creation and restoration are the bookends to Christ’s earthly work . . . “ (p.51) This week’s lesson in actuality must be seen from a comprehensive perspective which includes: creation, the fall, redemption and restoration. “Living by the Spirit” is a dynamic experience of all four parts. It is a story that God not only wants us to know but to also live out in the context of a world seeking answers. It is far more a story about God than a story about us—yet with us in the picture God’s love is made even more clear.

The 1984 NIV reads: 16 “So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

The 2010 NIV reads: 16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

The KJV and ESV (English Standard Version) both translate it as “walk”. “Walking” is a methphor drawn from the OT that reflects the way a person should live or behave. The word is in the present tense meaning: “to go on living or walking.” It is one’s “habitual conduct.” Living by the power and promptings of the Spirit is key to conquering sinful desires as pointed out in verse 25. (See also Rom. 8:2-5)

Early Christians were known as followers of “the Way” suggesting that Christianity was not an isolated set of theological beliefs “about” Jesus but rather a life characterized as walking as He did.

As Jesus sought to “fulfill” the Law and the Prophets (Matt 5:17) so Christians were known as “fulfilling” the teachings of Christ by weaving the principles He taught and lived into their own lives.

17 For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. (NIV8)

Keep in mind when referring to a Bible text that we must first ask what the author has in mind before we start making our own applications. Paul is not suggesting that non-Christians don’t have moral conflicts. They do in fact sense these conflicts. However, what Paul is saying is that all of us have been born with a disposition towards selfishness and that leads us have desires for that which are sinful. Accepting Christ and being filled with the Spirit does not put an end to the warring conflict that takes place between sinful self and the self that desires to be like Jesus. Sensitivity to sin and its effects become very real to the Spirit-filled Christian. This conflict is real but the good news is that this personal battle doesn’t have to end with us straddling the fence or worse yet yielding to the temptations of the flesh. Jesus had given an insight that Paul now emphasizes. Note what Jesus said about this personal conflict between good and evil (Lik 9:23-24):

23 Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. 24 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it.

Carl Cosaert frames the conflict this way: “Because the converted mind is too weak to resist the flesh by itself, the only hope we have of subduing the flesh is by making a daily decision (Luke 9:23) to side with the Spirit against ourselves. This is why Paul is so insistent that we choose to walk in the Spirit (Gal. 5:16).” Galatians, p.128.

Paul is simply saying that if we walk with God and are filled and live in harmony with His Spirit, we need not succumb to sinful desires. Sin and all of its forms of selfishness need not be our ruler! The choice is ours.

In Galatians 5:19-24, this inner conflict between good and evil is laid out in concrete comparisons: the works of flesh (sinful nature) vs the fruit of the Spirit.

19 The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self–control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. (NIV8)

There are some important differences.
Perhaps the most noticeable is that the sinful nature (the “flesh”) demands whereas the Spirit produces. This little insight has occupied much of my reflection over the past year or two. It is such an important insight and critical to our understanding of God, Satan, sin, redemption and emphasizes what Gabe Lyons does in his book The Next Christians, namely, we must read the whole story and not just the story about the fall and our redemption. The forceful nature of sin both internally and externally. This conflict began in Genesis which cast a deep shadow over God’s original design for the “newly” created earth causing Him to pronounce later the restoration called “the new earth.” The outworking of this principle is seen throughout Scripture but the questions raised in Genesis find a response in the last book of the Bible where the new earth is prepared and inhabited by a redeemed people.

Paul’s list of sins, 14 named but not meant to be an exhaustive list, could be categorized into four areas: sex, religion, society, and intemperance. What we must not overlook, however, is that Paul’s point is that the theological approach of the Judiazers is not sufficient to combat this assault by the sinful nature found within each of us. Paul is essentially saying that poor theology can be dangerous. A misunderstanding of God is much more than a difference of opinion. It can lead to excusing sin and losing eternal life. (5:21) The solution is not foun by trying to eliminate each sin one by one! Paul introduces the answer by referring to a single unifying truth: The power of belonging to Christ. As Christ was crucified on the cross so His followers must allow their “sinful nature with its passions and desires” to be crucified. (5:24) When they do they bear “the fruit” of the Spirit. “Fruit” is singular in Greek. That one Source will naturally produce qualities of the Spirit– nine are listed. For Paul the theological controversy facing the Galatians is dead serious! A corrupt view of God can lead to distorted ideas that lead to a breakdown in human relationships such as sexual and religious behaviors.

4. To meet the problems created by the Judaizers Paul presented an alternative to the law which is Christian love. (Gal. 5:22-23; Matt. 5:21-22, 27) False?

God’s law vs God’s love is a false dichotomy! The fruit of the Spirit found in Gal. 5:22-23 is not contrary to God’s law but rather its fulfillment. In this context notice the words of Jesus:

17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Anyone who breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Paul recognizes that the only way to have this kind of righteousness comes not by some outward legalistic exercise but by being led by the Holy Spirit. In 5:16-25 the Holy Spirit is brought front and center 7 times! This is a theme of Paul and the key to the fruit of “righteousness by faith.”

13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Rom 8:14-15, NIV8)

5. It is possible to live a victorious Christian life. (Gal. 5:16-26; Rom. 7:24-25) True

In continuation with the previous questions we should note that there are 5 key verbs in Gal. 5:16-26.
a. “walk” in the spirit (v.16)
b. “to be led” (v.18)
c. “to live” (v.25)
d. “to walk” (v.25)
e. “to crucify”

The common denominator in all cases is that they underscore the necessity an importance of the decisions we make. Making such a decision can be made difficult because of job security, family associations, internal desires, peer an cultural pressures . . . and the list could go on and on. Waiting for the pressure to subside is never a safe alternative. Note the following insights:

“The life of the Christian is not all smooth. He has stern conflicts to meet. Severe temptations assail him. "The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh." The nearer we come to the close of this earth's history, the more delusive and ensnaring will be the attacks of the enemy. His attacks will grow fiercer and more frequent. Those who resist light and truth will become more hardened and unimpressible, and more bitter against those who love God and keep His commandments. Ellen G White (MS 33, 1911). {6BC 1111.7}

Closing Reflections
The spiritual choices that confront us each day may not seem all that relevant to the world around us. They may never make the headlines or the evening news yet a life is at stake – ours. The key to victory is found outside of ourselves yet it must come inside. Describe it as we may whether it be walking with, abiding with, being led or living as – every verb form of the victorious Christian reflects a link with the Holy Spirit which leads us to the closing question for this week: How often have we prayed for the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, to lead us, to teach us and yes, even correct us?

Introduction

Perhaps one of the most difficult subjects to understand but also one of the most important is the relationship between law and gospel. How this “single” subject is understood shapes to a large degree one’s view of God as well as one’s own of self. Is the law at odds with the promise made to Abraham or does it give even more emphasis to the promised grace of God? That will be the focus of our study this week. The following are a few quotes from Ellen White on Galatians 3:21-25 that may be of interest to you in your study.

20-31 (Galatians 6:14; Ephesians 2:8, 9; Titus 3:5; Hebrews 7:25; Revelation 22:17). With Humble Hearts Survey the Atonement.--Let no one take the limited, narrow position that any of the works of man can help in the least possible way to liquidate the debt of his transgression. This is a fatal deception. If you would understand it, you must cease haggling over your pet ideas, and with humble hearts survey the atonement. {6BC 1071.4}

This matter is so dimly comprehended that thousands upon thousands claiming to be sons of God are children of the wicked one, because they will depend on their own works. God always demanded good works, the law demands it, but because man placed himself in sin where his good works were valueless, Jesus' righteousness alone can avail. Christ is able to save to the uttermost because He ever liveth to make intercession for us. {6BC 1071.5}

All that man can possibly do toward his own salvation is to accept the invitation, "Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely." No sin can be committed by man for which satisfaction has not been met on Calvary. Thus the cross, in earnest appeals, continually proffers to the sinner a thorough expiation (MS 50, 1900). {6BC 1071.6}

24-26 (see EGW on ch. 5:11). The Father Abundantly Satisfied.--The atonement that has been made for us by Christ is wholly and abundantly satisfactory to the Father. God can be just, and yet the justifier of those who believe (MS 28, 1905). {6BC 1071.7}

In our earlier study we established that the promise and agreement made with Abraham by God was very one-sided! God was to provide. Abraham was to believe and walk with God. Simple? Not really. Believing when the future seems dubious at best is not easy. It is all about trust. That’s why this week’s lesson is entitled “The Road to Faith.” The question being asked, however, is: Did God change his mind, change the basis for Abraham’s secure future?

The promise (Gen. 17:1,2):

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lordappeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty; walk before me and be blameless. ²I will confirm my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.”

Perhaps a confusing passage for Paul’s audience:

⁴You must obey my laws and be careful to follow my decrees. I am the Lord your God. ⁵Keep my decrees and laws, for the man who obeys them will live by them. I am the Lord.

Paul’s clarification:

²¹Is the law, therefore, opposed to the promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had been given that could impart life, then righteousness would certainly have come by the law. ²²But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given to those who believe.

“The law cannot be ‘contrary’ to the promises of God because the law and the promise are not rivals. They are both part of God’s one and only plan to save a world torn apart by sin. The law and the gospel simply play different roles.” Cosaert, p.69.

“. . . it is not the law’s fault that it cannot give life. God never intended for it to do that. The law can testify to what is right and wrong, but it is unable to forgive sin or give humans the moral power to obey its commands. Ibid, p.70

Question: What is Paul’s primary concern? Is it the law or is it sin?

Paul’s concern is clearly with the dominion of “sin” over the whole world. We are prisoners of sin which is revealed by the law “SO THAT” we can break that bondage through Christ who justifies us by faith. The foundation for this was established with Abraham! Verse 22 becomes the base thought from which his argument is made for hope given through Christ. The law was anything but a curse but neither was it the savior.

A parallel passage might be: Rom. 7:21- 8:2

²²For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; ²³but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members.²⁴What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? ²⁵Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord!

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.

8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, ²because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.

The liberty of which Paul is so anxious for everyone to pursue is freedom from the dominion of sin – even to not do what one does not want to do and to be able to do what one would like to do. (Rom. 7)

¹⁴For sin shall not be your master, because you are not under law, but under grace. (Rom. 6:14)

“The paidagogos was a slave that Roman society placed in a position of authority over the master’s son or sons from the time they turned 6 or 7 until they reached maturity. . . . But of all of the various things a paidagogos might do, his primary task boiled down to protection, prevention, and correction.” (Cosaert, p.75)

“God’s law was necessary ‘because we are also held in the custody of sin’s prevailing influence.” . . . It is true that the law does have the negative role of pointing out and condemning sin. But it also has the positive function of guarding and protecting us form evil. And even the negative aspect of condemning sin ultimately has the positive objective of helping us realize our need for Christ.” (Ibid. p. 77)

What law is the schoolmaster?

“What law is the schoolmaster to bring us to Christ? I answer both: Both the ceremonial and the moral code of ten commandments.” Ellen White, 1SM, p.233.

“The law reveals sin to us, and causes us to feel our need of Christ and to flee unto Him for pardon and peace by exercising repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Ellen White, 1SM, p. 234)

After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed:

“Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. ²For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him. ³Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. ⁴I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do. (Jn 17:1-4)

Marcionism was an Early Christian dualist belief system that originated in the teachings of Marcion of Sinope at Rome around the year 144;^[1] see alsoChristianity in the 2nd century.

Marcion believed Jesus Christ was the savior sent by God and Paul of Tarsus was his chief apostle, but he rejected the Hebrew Bible and the God of Israel(YHWH Elohim). Marcionists believed that the wrathful Hebrew God was a separate and lower entity than the all-forgiving God of the New Testament. This belief was in some ways similar to Gnostic Christian theology; notably, both are dualistic.

Marcion declared that Christianity was distinct from and in opposition to Judaism, see also Anti-Judaism. He rejected the entire Hebrew Bible, and declared that the God of the Hebrew Bible was a lesser demiurge, who had created the earth, but was (de facto) the source of evil.

The premise of Marcionism is that many of the teachings of Christ are incompatible with the actions of the God of the Old Testament. Focusing on the Pauline traditions of the Gospel, Marcion felt that all other conceptions of the Gospel, and especially any association with the Old Testament religion, was opposed to, and a backsliding from, the truth. He further regarded the arguments of Paul regarding law and gospel, wrath and grace, works and faith, flesh and spirit, sin and righteousness, death and life, as the essence of religious truth. He ascribed these aspects and characteristics as two principles, the righteous and wrathful God of the Old Testament, who is at the same time identical with the creator of the world, and a second God of the Gospel, quite unknown before Christ, who is only love and mercy. Conclusion

For Paul and hopefully for us, Christ is everything . Heaven has spoken very clearly: sin is the enemy and through Christ victory is certain. God established a definite plan for our redemption in which He made a promise with Abraham – a promise that spoke victory despite the pervasive sin problem. To ensure that the principles of His kingdom were not forgotten the law was given but never as a savior. The law and the promise are both part of the same solution. They are not two different ways to be saved and never were. With the coming of Christ a more in depth view of God and His plan was made more clear. With such a revelation we do not merely follow a set of rules. We have Jesus but in doing so we do not negate the law but we see an even higher calling. The ultimate conformity is to Christ. Being under such grace brings confidence not despair. We remain a work in progress as the Holy Spirit empowers us to see more clearly and to be more like Jesus. Combined, the law and the gospel are a clear revelation of God’s expectations, His character and His desire to claim us as His children. Like Abraham of old, we are directed towards the road of faith but whether we take that road or a detour is a choice we must make.

Introduction

Paul had an experience to share. The one-time-persecutor had a major life change. It impacted him so deeply on a personal level that the boldness he once had for persecuting remained just as strong as he went about sharing the grounds for his new life. The problem he faced now was with those who believed as he once did. He understood their perspective, however, and his writings to the Galatians reveal answers he no doubt found from his own study and reflection. One thing was clear. He would not tolerate compromise on the essence of the gospel. He rediscovered his own theological roots in Abraham. What he once used to justify his thinking now had grown to mean just the opposite. He had no time for anything that took away from the all-sufficient ransom price that Christ paid for each of us. He was amazed at how easily some had forgotten what they had once known. The pressure from peers was compromising the powerful message of the gospel and Paul felt he had to write. He did so in chapter 3 of Galatians by showing that the gospel he was sharing was anchored in the Old Testament—notably in the experience of Abraham.

Paul was frustrated with the compromise he saw going on in regards to the gospel message. He begins the chapter with the words, “You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you.” “Foolish” is a polite translation whereas J.B. Phillips is a bit more direct when he translates the Greek phrase: “You idiots.” The Greek word does have a reference to one’s intelligence. The problem is that they once knew the truth but had fallen away and were practicing just the opposite of what they once knew. This raises another question:

A second question emphasizes the point and remember the context of the discussion is circumcision. (3:3-5)

After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? ⁴Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for nothing? ⁵Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?

Paul is clear. The grounds for salvation is neither one’s heritage nor one’s good deeds and in this case even one’s obedience since circumcision was part of the Jewish law (Deut. 17:10). He will establish why that is a bit later in the chapter but right now he his rebuking those who know better. Every blessing they had received had come as a gift and to base it on anything else would mean that they had “earned” it. The blessings would no longer be a gift and that undermines the gospel they had accepted from Paul earlier.

“No matter how God’s Spirit may transform our lives, no matter how we may grow in spiritual knowledge or ability, the basis of our acceptance with Christ never changes—it is faith in what God has done for us in Christ.” Carl Cosaert in Galatians, p.49.

Application Truth: We do what is right not in order to become Christians but because we are Christians OR PUT ANOTHER WAY An apple tree doesn’t produce apples in order to become an apple tree but because it is one.

3. Abraham’s obedience established his relationship with God. Gen. 12:1-3; Heb. 11:17-19. False

Abraham was a central figure to Judaism. The experience of Abraham to Paul was fundamental to his understanding of the role of faith. He refers to Abraham at least nine times in the book of Galatians. Keep in mind that Galatians was written before any of the gospels written by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John.

Key to Paul’s discussion is Genesis 12:1-3,

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you.

² “I will make you into a great nation

and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

and you will be a blessing.

³ I will bless those who bless you,

and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

will be blessed through you.” (NIV)

The basis of God’s covenant with Abraham centered on God’s promise to him and it was the promises are all one-sided! They are all about what God would do (“I will”).

What was Abraham’s response to God’s promises? Note Gen. 15:6,

⁶Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.

The belief of Abraham in God and His word/promises, not Abraham’s actions, was the basis for his “righteousness.” This was the center around which Galatians 3 revolved. This raises a question for our own further thought.

Application Truth: To make a promise to do something for God so that He will do something for us in return is legalism. Gal 3:17,18. True

4. Paul’s call to ministry was a partial fulfillment of the promise made to Abraham. Gen. 12:1-3 True

This is a critical issue and the very reason Paul confronted Peter in Gal. 2:11-14. Paul was deeply concerned over the narrowing of the Gospel. The promise to Abraham was that the blessing was to go to all nations. While Abraham was obedient, his relationship with God was not rooted in his own obedience.

He drives this point home in Gal. 3:10-11,

¹⁰All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” ¹¹Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, “The righteous will live by faith.”

Application Truth: No matter how hard we try we will always come up short. Our righteousness is never perfect but the good news is that Christ’s is! The next question is: then why even try! Because we are children of Abraham! Our faith/belief is built on the promises and actions in our behalf by the God whom we love. Our motivation comes from love and not from a position of bargaining with God for an entrance into His kingdom!

5. To correct the error of the Jewish teaching that obedience saves, Paul interjects a correction by saying that we are saved by obedience plus faith. Gal. 3:10; Eph. 2:8-10 False?

This is exactly what Paul was fighting. He saw it as a compromise of the gospel. Note 3: 13,

¹³Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree.

Our imperfections at the admissions of the law itself place us under the curse of the law! So what hope do we have. All have sinned. All are imperfect. When Christ was hung upon the tree or the cross he was “cursed” by the imperfections of each of us. He bore the curse set forth in the law for disobedience!

Application Truth: The struggle in the Christian experience is not in doing but yielding—yielding self to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is easy to confuse the work of justification with that of sanctification.

“Justification is our title to heaven. Sanctification, however, refers to the enabling power of God’s Spirit that begins to work in us the very moment we are justified. Thus sanctification is not the means by which we earn the right to enter into heaven—it is the way that God fits us to live in heaven. It is the process by which God makes real in our experience what is already true of us by faith in Christ.” Carl Cosaert, in Galatians, p. 49.

Conclusion

“From start to finish in the Christian life, the basis of our salvation is faith in Christ alone. It was because of Abraham’s faith in God’s promises that he was counted as righteous, and that same gift of righteousness is available for anyone today who shares Abraham’s faith. The only reason we are not condemned for our mistakes is that Jesus paid the price for our sins by dying in our place.” (Sabbath School Quarterly)

Introduction

Paul had an experience to share. The one-time-persecutor had a major life change. It impacted him personally so deeply that the boldness he once had for persecuting remained just as strong as he shared the grounds for his new life. The problem he faced now was with those who believed as he once did. He understood their perspective, however, and his writings to the Galatians reveal answers he no doubt found from his own study and reflection. One thing was clear. He would not tolerate compromise on the essence of the gospel. He rediscovered his own theological roots in Abraham. What he once used to justify his thinking now had grown to mean just the opposite. He had no time for anything that took away from the all sufficient ransom price that Christ paid for each of us. He was amazed at how easily some had forgotten what they had once known. The pressure from peers was compromising the powerful message of the gospel and Paul felt he had to write. He did so in chapter 3 of Galatians by showing that the gospel he was sharing was anchored in the Old Testament—notably in the experience of Abraham.

The Greek word used by the NIV of Stephen falling “asleep” (Acts 7:60)from the stoning is the same Greek word used by Jesus to describe Lazrus being “asleep” prior Jesus resurrecting him. (John 11:11) Some translations avoid the word “sleep” but within these contexts the word brings with it the certain hope of this a being temporary condition.

A Few Introductory Reflections

Some time ago I found the following quote etched on the American pavilion at Epcot in Orlando, Florida: “Throughout the centuries there were men who took the first steps down new roads armed with nothing but their own vision.” This was certainly the case with Saul who became the Apostle Paul. The encounter with the risen Christ changed everything. He saw Christ, himself and others differently. The temporary blindness revealed a spiritual blindness he had never “seen” before. What a difference the new understanding brought to his life and to the life of others. Nothing, not persecution nor sufferings of any kind, could erode away his new found hope. He had a new lease on life. His zeal did not decrease but it had a new focus. The persecutor had a new vision. The passion with which he sought to capture and persecute others now changed. He had a new story to tell. Despite a frightful past, he was a man chosen to be a medium through whom the risen Christ would change the world and the destiny of multitudes in generations to come. Not only do we today benefit from Paul’s ministry but we are also called to share the hope he found on that Damascus road. We too can have a part in changing the world but it all begins with our own encounter with Christ.

³As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. ⁴He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”

⁵“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.

“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. ⁶“Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”

⁷The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. ⁸Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. ⁹For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything. (Acts 9:3-8)

Imagine what this one encounter meant for the world! The future changed in the twinkling of the eye! Everywhere men and women huddled in groups fearing for their lives. No doubt they heard Persecutor Saul was coming. They were right about that. He did come but blinded. Never would they have thought proud Saul would be come humble Paul. Though blinded he would soon begin to see them differently and all because he saw Jesus differently! But transformation doesn’t come without some pain—some deep heart searching. Note the words of Ellen White:

In the glorious Being who stood before him he saw the Crucified One. Upon the soul of the stricken Jew the image of the Saviour's countenance was imprinted forever. The words spoken struck home to his heart with appalling force. Into the darkened chambers of his mind there poured a flood of light, revealing the ignorance and error of his former life and his present need of the enlightenment of the Holy Spirit.

Saul now saw that in persecuting the followers of Jesus he had in reality been doing the work of Satan. (AA 115)

For three days Saul was "without sight, and neither did eat nor drink." These days of soul agony were to him as years. Again and again he recalled, with anguish of spirit, the part he had taken in the martyrdom of Stephen. With horror he thought of his guilt in allowing himself to be controlled by the malice and prejudice of the priests and rulers, even when the face of Stephen had been lighted up with the radiance of heaven. In sadness and brokenness of spirit he recounted the many times he had closed his eyes and ears against the most striking evidences and had relentlessly urged on the persecution of the believers in Jesus of Nazareth. (AA 118)

God never leads His children otherwise than they would choose to be led, if they could see the end from the beginning, and discern the glory of the purpose which they are fulfilling as coworkers with Him. Not Enoch, who was translated to heaven, not Elijah, who ascended in a chariot of fire, was greater or more honored than John the Baptist, who perished alone in the dungeon. "Unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake" (Philippians 1:29). And of all the gifts that Heaven can bestow upon men, fellowship with Christ in His sufferings is the most weighty trust and the highest honor. {EGW in Conflict and Courage, p.278}

Stephen trusted but could not see beyond his stoning. What faith! What confidence in God. Stone after stone, bruise after bruise did not move him from the conviction that God had a plan even if he could not see it at the time. What a meeting that will be when Paul rushes up to Stephen.

Over time I have been brought to a timeless truth over and over again and it is this: We must not try to draw conclusions or try to see into the future when we or someone we know is in the midst of a crisis. The “why’s” of life will be among the very last questions answered. We must live in the present and simply place our trust in God. Some day the purpose or meaning will be known. Not everything is God’s doing but from it good can still come.

When Paul met the risen Christ on the way to Damascus Paul does not ask “What must I do to be saved?” but rather “Lord, what would you have me to do?” (Acts 9:6

“ ‘Get up,’ the Lord said, ‘and go into Damascus. There you will be told all that you have been assigned to do.’(Acts 22:10)

What becomes clear is that by meeting Christ Paul did not just become a Christian. He became one sent on a mission. What that mission was eventually became clear in time. Paul

When you were baptized did you experience both repentance as well as a call to serve?

4. Paul changed religions after his conversion on the Damascus road. (Phil 3:6; Gal. 2:15; Rom. 121:1-3; Gal. 1:13) True and False

What really happened on the road to Damascus? What was it that changed? He changed from a persecutor to an apostle but there was more to it than that. Years later when Paul reflected upon his experience when Christ’s identity was revealed to him it became clear that he did not change his religion; he changed his mission.

“As Paul saw it years after, when the Son was revealed to him, he did not change his religion; he changed his mission and his understanding of the divine timetable. The one who had been persecuting the church under the authority of the chief priests now became the one preaching the Son to the Gentiles under the authority of God himself. . . . It would seem that for Paul having become a Christian and having become an apostle were one and the same thing. Becoming both of these, however he did not cease being a Jew.” (Harold Weiss in Paul of Tarsus, pp. 18-19)

Paul never found anything intrinsically wrong with life in Judaism but he did clarify what a “true Jew” was. (Rom 8:28,29; Gal. 3:29, 2 Cor. 11:22)

In regards to the “church” Ellen White provides key insights:

“In the record of the conversion of Saul important principles are given us, which we should ever bear in mind. Saul was brought directly into the presence of Christ. He was one whom Christ intended for a most important work, one who was to be a "chosen vessel" unto Him; yet the Lord did not at once tell him of the work that had been assigned him. He arrested him in his course and convicted him of sin; but when Saul asked, "What wilt Thou have me to do?" the Saviour placed the inquiring Jew in connection with His church, there to obtain a knowledge of God's will concerning him.” ( AA 120)

“The marvelous light that illumined the darkness of Saul was the work of the Lord; but there was also a work that was to be done for him by the disciples. Christ had performed the work of revelation and conviction; and now the penitent was in a condition to learn from those whom God had ordained to teach His truth.” (AA 121)

“Many have an idea that they are responsible to Christ alone for their light and experience, independent of His recognized followers on earth. Jesus is the friend of sinners, and His heart is touched with their woe. He has all power, both in heaven and on earth; but He respects the means that He has ordained for the enlightenment and salvation of men; He directs sinners to the church, which He has made a channel of light to the world.” (AA 122)

So did Paul change churches? What changed? Is it ever necessary to change churches? Why or why not?

5. Saul believed. Saul acted on his belief. Saul received grace. This shows that we are saved by belief plus obedience. False

In some ways this question really misses Paul’s point and experience. Paul wasn’t so much anti-law as he was opposed to anything that would obscure the face of Christ as the Redeemer. Paul discovered the secret to living a free life. That freedom from sin and death had to have a source beyond the world of sin and death. That hope, that reality is found in the risen Christ.

We see this is such biblical passages as Eph 3: 8,9

⁸For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— ⁹not by works, so that no one can boast. ¹⁰For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

And then again in Titus 3:8

⁴But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, ⁵he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, ⁶whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, ⁷so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. ⁸This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good. These things are excellent and profitable for everyone.

Christianity is as Charles Colson points out not just a relationship with Christ but a whole new worldview. I like the way Harold Weiss puts it:

“The different degrees of glory to which Christians attain as they are being changed from glory to glory are not stations on the road to heavenly glorification but stations on the road of self-giving to others in service for the Gospel of the cross. (2 Cor.4:5)” (Harold Weiss in Paul of Tarsus, p. 150).

Some Concluding Reflections

I have found the following an insightful summary for this week’s summary.

“As an ambassador for Christ (2 Cor.5:20) Paul sees his task as that of declaring what God had done in Christ. But as such he is not primarily revealing God’s work. He is not the one through whom God’s glory is revealed, as Moses was said to have been. He does communicate knowledge of the glory of God, but he does this only to the degree that by the Spirit of the living God he conducts himself as a faithful slave who is constrained by the love of his Lord (2 Cor.5:14). God’s glory, however, does not shine now in him; it shines in the face of Christ (2Cor. 4:6). Conducting his service under the constraints of love, he has found freedom wherever the Spirit of the Lord is present (2 Cor. 3:17). This freedom in his Lord is neither a psychological nor a social way of escaping responsibility. It is rather a vision of God that transcends the limitations of creatures of flesh since it is based on God’s action in Christ. There is where the eschatological kingdom is established (2 Cor. 5:18).” (Harold Weiss in Paul of Tarsus, p. 151

Introduction

Perhaps you heard the story of a father who was relaxing as he read the newspaper. During the whole time his young son persisted in interrupting him, wanting the father to play. After numerous attempts to redirect the boy’s attention to something else the father came upon a great idea! He found a large map in the newspaper and tore it up in small pieces. Proud of his creative idea, he handed the pieces to his son and said, “When you put this map of the world back together, we will go out and play.”

The father settled back and resumed his reading absolutely sure he had just carved out a long time to read and relax. Not so! In a short time the boy returned with the map taped together. Shocked that his son knew that much about geography, he asked him how he had recreated the map so quickly.

The little boy replied, “It was easy! There is a picture of a man on the back. When I got the man right, I got the world right too.”

The book of Revelation can be like putting a strange and difficult puzzle together. However, if we can keep our focus on Christ the puzzle will come together. Maybe not completely, maybe not today but the meaning will emerge. Today’s lesson is an important step in that direction. There is something about genuine worship that moves the focus from us to God and with that change comes an amazing fulfillment in our own lives. No wonder a study of Revelation promises to bring a true revival and reformation.

(My Teaching Notes)

1. The greater the revelation the more radical the transformation. True (Isa.6:1-8; Dan. 3:24-30; Gen.3:8-13; Rev.3:13-18)

Before we answer this question I’d like to ask you another question and I think it is an important one. “Who begins the worship experience?”

· Is it the pastor when he or she begins sermon preparation?

· Is it the SS teacher when he or she stands before the SS class?

· Is it we as we reflect upon the awesome acts of God?

While worship may be part of each of these activities, we’d like to suggest that none of these options is really the “who” behind the initiation of the “the worship experience.” Even our worship begins with God and not with us. From the start it is God and not we who is the primary mover. The Creation week makes that clear with the culmination of the Sabbath which follows all that He had created. The awareness of God’s love for us is initiated by God Himself and not by our imaginations, study or reflections. The self-revelation of God to us is His gift. Worship rejoices in that joint experience. We must remember: We don’t make the Sabbath holy, God did before we ever came onto the scene. We don’t send the Holy Spirit to awaken our minds, God does. We don’t create a revival and reformation, God does. The goodness and grace of God precedes our awareness. We come to realize the impact of the words, “In the beginning God . . . “ Of course, worship per se, doesn’t happen without us. As with any communication, more than one is involved. However, my point is this: True worship takes place when we come together with God, recognize God for what He was, is and will be and respond accordingly from our hearts. God’s self-revelation changes us. History has suggested that often we think we initiate worship with the hope that we will get God involved, change God and maybe even alter His plans for us. Self easily and quickly rises to take the throne from God. Worship is foremost about us joining God rather than we coaxing God to join us or to listen to us.

This was Isaiah’s experience when he came into the presence of God. The self-revelation of God in turn revealed “self” to Isaiah. Seeing the glory of God he exclaimed, “Woe to me!” . . . “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.” (Isa. 6:5) The revelation of God transformed the reluctant Isaiah into a humble but willing servant: “Here am I. Send me!”

It is the revelation of God that changes even pagan kings such as Nebuchadnezzar. The revelation of God in the midst of the fires that he, Nebuchadnezzar, had set to destroy the three Hebrews caused him to radically alter his political plans. He was transformed. He promoted Shadrach, Meshach and Abendnego instead of killing them. God’s self-revelations makes all the difference.

So it will be in the last days according to Zechariah 8:23. This time God reveals himself through His ambassadors.

²³“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: In those days ten men from different nations and languages of the world will clutch at the sleeve of one Jew. And they will say, ‘Please let us walk with you, for we have heard that God is with you.’ ” (NLT)

The revelation of God, however, is not always welcomed. Guilt often hides us from the very remedy for the hurt we feel—the hurt from our own doing and/or the hurt caused by someone else. This is what happened to Adam and Eve after they sinned and then heard God walking in the garden. They hid but God still called to them, “Where are you?” That question is still there for us today and for the Church in Laodicea.

“¹⁹I correct and ^ediscipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference.

²⁰“Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”

So keep in mind as we study about worship: The greater the revelation the greater the transformation.

The ultimate issue is not about days. The key to this question is found in the words “the ultimate issue.” Throughout history different issues have emerged to be the grounds for some aspect of truth to be either revealed or emphasized about God. “Salvation and glory and power belong” to God (Rev. 19:1) and as such this is the “ultimate issue.” For Adam and Eve it was loyalty to God’s instructions by not eating from a forbidden tree, for the three Hebrews it was about loyalty to God by not worshiping a prideful king, for the remnant of the Apocalypse it is maintaining their loyalty to the One who “made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water” and not compromising their loyalty by worshiping a substitute (Rev. 14:6,7 vs 13:11-17; 12:17). In each case the immediate issue seemed insignificant but from a cosmic perspective the precipitating issues were anything but insignificant.

In Isaiah 14:13-14 we see the universal sin problem of self-centeredness expressed in these words:

‘I will ascend to heaven and set my throne above God’s stars.

I will preside on the mountain of the gods

far away in the north.

¹⁴I will climb to the highest heavens

and be like the ^dMost High.’

The problem picks up intensity in Dan. 7:25

²⁵He will defy the Most High and oppress the holy people of the Most High. He will try to change their sacred festivals and laws, and they will be placed under his control for a time, times, and half a time.

The devastating thing about self is that it will justify it’s ambitions and use the name of the Selfless One to justify its own self-centeredness. In the end, the conflict between self and selflessness is the ultimate issue and at stake is the recognition of who God is and what He has done. The remnant become with God being the ultimate source of true selflessness and represented by His remnant.

²For you will be expelled from the synagogues, and the time is coming when those who kill you will think they are doing a holy service for God. (Jn 16:2 NLT)

¹⁵He was then permitted to give life to this statue so that it could speak. Then the statue of the beast commanded that anyone refusing to worship it must die. (Rev. 13:15 NLT)

The seventh-day Sabbath with its anchor in “In the beginning God” becomes the agitation undermining the basic premise of all selfishness—the created usurping the prerogatives of the Creator. Worship is not about a day but the day is symbolic of a greater truth -- the truth about God. Worship is the expression of that truth. Because of its focus on God instead of self, the significance of the seventh-day Sabbath polarizes fact from fiction, selflessness from self-centeredness and makes the character of God the “gold standard” of all righteousness and the object of worship.

3. God has given Wall Street a prophetic message found in Rev. 14:6,7. True.

The first angel’s message is all about worshiping “him who made.” It is all about God the Owner and as such we become His stewards or disciples. Two biblical truths relate directly to this relationship between the Owner and the steward: The Sabbath – symbolic of God’s claim of our time (Ex.20:8-11) – and secondly the tithe – God’s claim of our resources (Mal 3:7-12). Our incomes are a representation of our life which is why tithe and offerings are linked to “returning” to God. Tithe and offerings are literal but they are representative of God’s claim to our time, talent and treasure. God is clearly rebuking the greed and selfishness that has plunged the world into a financial crisis (Isa 55 & 56; Mal 3). The crisis is not about money. The crisis is about the very issues we spoke about in question #2. Separation from God is a consequence of self-centeredness which eventually expresses itself as greed. It does so even at the cost of robbing one another and if necessary killing those who dare stand in the way of serving self (Jer. 17:9; Gen 4:6-12; Jn 16:2). But greed is essentially about robbing God of what is His which impacts all relationships. Hence the prophetic message termed as the first angel’s message of Rev. 14 speaks to the kind of greed often revealed by some at Wall Street.

4. Worship and all other doctrines are linked to the first four words of Scripture: “In the beginning God.” True (Matt.4:10; Rev. 14:6,7)

There is a lot of discussion about creation vs evolution. While that discussion is important we must not allow that “controversy” to distract from the message of the book of Genesis. “In the beginning God” is not only the root of understanding about God but also about us. Both concepts are inextricably linked to worship. Chapter 1 is not presented as a conjecture but as an assumption. This chapter reads like a worship liturgy – the first day, “it was good,” the second day, “it was good” and so forth. When it is completed the crescendo builds and the pronouncement is proclaimed: “it was very good.” God in chapter 1 is “Elohim” but in chapter two a new term is introduced and that is “Yahweh Elohim.” Before we get to the fall of Adam and Eve and then of Cain the writer wants us to know that God is the God of relationships. This term is used later in scripture to denote God as the Promise Keeper – we break our promises but God keeps his.

So the foundation is established in the first two chapters that all worship must be directed towards God and secondly our fulfillment is found in Him and Him alone. It is not a selfish thing for God to speak of worship of Him for worship is communion. He who created knows that life flows from Him into His creation. It is without question that this is behind the words of Jesus: I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (Jn 10:10). God’s search for Adam and Eve in Genesis 3:9 is all about who He is as “Yahweh Elohim” and then again as He approaches Cain both before and then after his horrible deed with Able. (Gen.4:6-12) Is it any wonder that the Serpent when he tempts Eve leaves off the relational aspect of God’s character and only refers to Him as Elohim (Gen. 3:1)! Worship links both aspects of God’s name. (Rev.5:8-14; 14:1) The remnant of Revelation bring a response to the fall of man in Genesis—a response with cosmic implications. The “Father’s name [is] written on their foreheads.” (14:1) The book of Revelation is the book where all books, all doctrines of the Bible meet and end.

5. The joy of heaven comes because the redeemed were faithful to the end. False (Rev.7:9-10, 14-17; 15:2-4; 19:1-10)

No doubt there is great joy over the redemption of God’s people!! However the greater joy expressed in Scripture is in God.

¹After this, I heard what sounded like a vast crowd in heaven shouting,

“Praise the Lord!

Salvation and glory and power belong to our God.

² His judgments are true and just.

He has punished the great prostitute

who corrupted the earth with her immorality.

He has avenged the murder of his servants.”

³And again their voices rang out:

“ Praise the Lord! (Rev.19:1-3 NLT)

Conclusion

Perhaps one of the greatest summary passages regarding worship is found in Revelation 4:9,10.

¹¹“You are worthy, O Lord our God,

to receive glory and honor and power.

For you created all things,

and they exist because you created what you pleased.”

The original plan of Genesis climaxes with it being fulfilled in the book of Revelation. Once again the abundant life is given without the distraction of sin. Note carefully the following:

“And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of His character. As Jesus opens before them the riches of redemption and the amazing achievements in the great controversy with Satan, the hearts of the ransomed thrill with more fervent devotion, and with more rapturous joy they sweep the harps of gold; and ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands of voices unite to swell the mighty chorus of praise.

"And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honor, and glory, and power, be unto Him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever." Revelation 5:13.

The great controversy is ended. Sin and sinners are no more. The entire universe is clean. One pulse of harmony and gladness beats through the vast creation. From Him who created all, flow life and light and gladness, throughout the realms of illimitable space. From the minutest atom to the greatest world, all things, animate and inanimate, in their unshadowed beauty and perfect joy, declare that God is love.” Ellen G White in The Great Controversy, p.678.

Introductory Reflections

As we study this week’s lesson one principle becomes dominant: God only requires what He first gives – faithfulness. While one theme of this lesson might be apostasy, the first theme is God’s faithfulness to His promises. God is trustworthy; we are not. God’s love is without flaw; ours is not. God is willing to forgive; we often are not. God’s love calls us but ours hardly notices His anguish caused by our slowness to respond to His calls to return. The ultimate question arising from this lesson is this: “Where do we stand?” or better yet “For whom do we stand?” Perhaps the brightest light coming from this week’s lesson can be summarized in Philippians 1:6,

“ . . . he who began a good work in you will carry it out onto completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”

This is only possible because of God’s faithfulness and His persistent calls to each one of us to return to Him.

Haggai repeatedly charged his audience to reflect on how their current situation resulted from neglecting their relationship with God (1:5-7; 2:15-18). Prior to building a place of worship Haggai called for a greater awareness of God’s holiness in their hearts and hence the reason he saw in the natural disasters a call to repentance. Haggai, Zechariah and Malachi are linked with their themes of the need for spiritual renewal. It is fitting that the last message of the Old Testament ends on this note – a logical entreaty prior to the coming of the Messiah 400 years later.

2. The restoration of worship is a priority for God. (Hag. 1:9-11) True and False

Unqualified worship was a problem Israel had. It is a heart religion, not just a formal religion that God is calling for. God knows how we are made (Gen 1:26) and what it will take for us to find fulfillment in life. Worship is not only a recognition of who God is but who we are as well and false worship skirts either or both of these critical issues.

3. Worship is worship as long as one is sincere. (Ezek. 8:1-18) True

In fact it doesn’t even have to be “sincere” for the answer to be true! The issue isn’t if it is worship but is it true biblical worship. Idols can be worshiped, formalism can be worship but God is asking for a heart religion. Chapter 8 lists the leaders involved in all sorts of “detestable” worship leading God to conclude:

17 He said to me, “Have you seen this, son of man? Is it a trivial matter for the house of Judah to do the detestable things they are doing here? Must they also fill the land with violence and continually provoke me to anger? Look at them putting the branch to their nose! ¹⁸Therefore I will deal with them in anger; I will not look on them with pity or spare them. Although they shout in my ears, I will not listen to them.”

4. What one does in the dark does not have an influence on others. (Ezek. 8:12) True

12 He said to me, “Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel are doing in the darkness, each at the shrine of his own idol?

Sin in the camp impacted the whole nation and the only way left was for God to bring judgment and “respond in fury.” (v.18) A similar response and rationale to the second angel’s message of Rev. 14.

5. Worshipping an “image” is still worship. (Dan. 3; Rev. 13) True

True but not true worship of God. It has been said that he who loves less controls more. This was the experience when false worship was introduced to Daniel and his companions and prophesied in Rev. 13:15.

6. When apostasy is discovered, God brings judgment upon the people or removes His presence or both. (Jer. 29:10-14; Mal. 4:5,6; Rev. 14:6-12) True and False

False because in the references cited God first calls for His people to return to him – asking them to repent. This is the invitation that is to be given to the world prior to Jesus’ coming –Rev. 14:6-12. It is true because as in times gone by with the refusal to accept God’s invitation judgment does come and God removes his protective hand.

7. The challenge with apostasy is to get God to return. (Jer. 3:11-13, 19) False

Not at all! It is we who struggle with returning and this is why Jeremiah is called the weeping prophet. He saw the tragedy of rebellious hearts.

“ ‘Return, faithless Israel,’ declares the Lord,

‘I will frown on you no longer,

for I am merciful,’ declares the Lord,

‘I will not be angry forever.

13 Only acknowledge your guilt—

you have rebelled against the Lord your God,

under every spreading tree,

and have not obeyed me,’ ”

declares the Lord.

“The Lord always remained faithful to His covenant commitment, but the Israelite people repeatedly broke the covenant as Canaanite polytheism lured them away from the Lord. They broke the laws banning the worship of idols, engage in immoral sex rituals, and ignored God requirements for righteousness.” NLT Study Bible, p.1213.

Note how Nehemiah received the word about the walls of Jerusalem being torn down and the gates burned.

4 When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. ⁵Then I said:

“O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, ⁶let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s house, have committed against you. ⁷We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

“The destroyed wall was a shameful reminder that God had destroyed the city, fulfilling the covenant curses because of the people’s sin (1:2, 6-8; 2:17). Consequently, the rebuilt wall would be a sign of God’s blessing and proof that God was bringing the promised restoration to his covenant people.” NLT Study Bible, p.814

9. False worship can cause one to be blotted out of the book of life. (Ex. 32:31-34) True

Sin is terrible and there is a terrible price to pay. God knows this and hence the reason for His pleading for His people to return – it is a call for life over death. Moses recognized the tragic consequences as well.

31 So Moses went back to the Lord and said, “Oh, what a great sin these people have committed! They have made themselves gods of gold. ³²But now, please forgive their sin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.”

22 But Samuel replied:

“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices

Micah also speaks of obedience coming from the heart.

To act justly and to love mercy

and to walk humbly with your God.

Concluding Thought

A familiar Bible verse summarizes quite well the main thrust of this lesson. It is found in Rev. 14:12 – a passage following the last gospel message to be given to the world.

12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God’s commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.

Jesus must first become our substitute and then our example. We can never imitate Jesus whether it be in worship, in the home or in the work place without Jesus within.

The first four commandments speak to the issue of worship. They begin with God’s recognition of their problem and His intervention to resolve their distress. He delivers them. Worship is the expected response and God explains, in light of what He has done for them, what their response should be like (Ex.20:1-4):

1. Worship no other gods (why should they. He not they rescued them!)

2. Don’t depreciate our relationship by creating substitutes to be worshipped.

3. My name is my character – don’t misrepresent me.

4. Don’t forget that I am your Creator and as such I know what is best for you.

We must distinguish between our need and the One who meets our need.

Lev. 10:1-2 explains what happened,

“Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu took their censers, put fire in them and added incense; and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord, contrary to his command. 2 So fire came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord.”

How ironic! The offering that God asks of us is symbolic of the One who would substitute His own life for us yet Nadab and Abihu offer a substitute of their own making! They failed to distinguish between the common and the holy.

The book Patriarchs and Prophets offers this warning:

God has pronounced a curse upon those who depart from His commandments, and put no difference between common and holy things. He declares by the prophet: "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness! . . . Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! . . . which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! . . . They have cast away the law of the Lord of hosts, and despised the word of the Holy One of Israel." Isaiah 5:20-24. (PP 360)

Next to Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu stood highest in rank. In this context notice what Ellen White says regarding those in positions of authority and leadership:

“Great blessings or privileges should never lull to security or carelessness. They should never give license to sin or cause the recipients to feel that God will not be exact with them. All the advantages which God has given are His means to throw ardor into the spirit, zeal into effort, and vigor into the carrying out of His holy will.” (PP 360)

4. Being zealous is an identifying characteristic of true worship. (Gal. 4:17-19) True and False

"Those people are zealous to win you over, but for no good. What they want is to alienate you from us, so that you may be zealous for them. 18 It is fine to be zealous, provided the purpose is good, and to be so always and not just when I am with you. 19 My dear children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth until Christ is formed in you, 20 how I wish I could be with you now and change my tone, because I am perplexed about you!" (Gal 4:17-19)

Paul’s great concern was not the “zeal” but rather that

“Christ is formed in you.” (v.19) We find an example of zeal in David but perhaps most profoundly when he concludes,

17 “The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit;

a broken and contrite heart,

O God, you will not despise.” (Ps 51:17)

"Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites—Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth—became insolent 2 and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. 3 They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, “You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the Lord is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the Lord’s assembly?” (Num 16:1-3)

Speaking of Korah and his colleagues Ellen White adds,

A temptation, slight at first, had been harbored, and had strengthened as it was encouraged, until their minds were controlled by Satan, and they ventured upon their work of disaffection. Professing great interest in the prosperity of the people, they first whispered their discontent to one another and then to leading men of Israel. Their insinuations were so readily received that they ventured still further, and at last they really believed themselves to be actuated by zeal for God. (PP 396-397)

Leaders do make mistakes and they do need to hear from their people. The problem with Korah was that “Jealousy had given rise to envy, and envy to rebellion.” (Ibid. 397). Once the few were convinced of their cause they moved to the congregation as a whole and accused Moses of restricting their “rights.”

They said that the congregation were not at fault, since they desired nothing more than their rights; but that Moses was an overbearing ruler; that he had reproved the people as sinners, when they were a holy people, and the Lord was among them. (PP 397)

So in the midst of God’s providential leading, with God restoring worship by bringing a sanctuary into their midst that he might dwell among them, His leaders led His people into a rebellion under the guise of restoring rights to the people!.

The worship that God wished to establish was thwarted by Korah’s own desire for self-exaltation.

Note this insight:

It is hardly possible for men to offer greater insult to God than to despise and reject the instrumentalities He would use for their salvation. The Israelites had not only done this, but had purposed to put both Moses and Aaron to death. Yet they did not realize the necessity of seeking pardon of God for their grievous sin. (PP 402)

. . .

Every advance made by those whom God has called to lead in His work has excited suspicion; every act has been misrepresented by the jealous and faultfinding. Thus it was in the time of Luther, of the Wesleys and other reformers. Thus it is today. (PP 404)

Reflective Conclusion

Rebellion in heaven arose over issues impacted by worship. That rebellion spread and has become the battle ground on earth. Some of the most dedicated and talented the church has can lose their focus, spread doubts and suspicions among others and attack the very means God wishes to us to bring joy and harmony. Superfluous are the terms liberals and conservative. It matters not which side one is on either more than it mattered if one were a Sadducee or a Pharisee – the very object of worship, Jesus, is crucified.

Sad but true is the following statement:

God works by the manifestation of His Spirit to reprove and convict the sinner; and if the Spirit’s work is finally rejected, there is no more that God can do for the soul. The last resource of divine mercy has been employed. The transgressor has cut himself off from God, and sin has no remedy to cure itself. There is no reserved power by which God can work to convict and convert the sinner. (PP 405)

This not meant to be a blind endorsement of leadership but it does suggest that criticism can be demonic and though not intentionally meant to harm it can hinder the work of God and create a void for true worship characterized by the attitude spoken of by David,

“The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit

a broken and contrite heart,

O God, you will not despise.” (Ps 51:17)

I am challenged by the words of Paul Tournier, a Swiss physician and theologian. He wrote:

“The church must proclaim, but it must also show: show what happens when a businessman wants to be honest, when a physician really respects the human person, when an artist really seeks his inspiration in God, when a lawyer applies his faith in his profession. This means, now and always, a veritable revolution.

Even in our world today, as deeply pagan as it is, every man can have a totally new experience as soon as he allows God to direct his real life and not merely to inspire his feelings.” (Paul Tournier in The Whole Person in a Broken World, p.167)

This week we close this quarter’s study of “Garments of Grace.” If indeed we are “clothed” with the garments of Christ’s grace then we will grow in our reflection of Him. Tournier also includes a statement from Gustave Thibon who said,

“No sooner does a man expel God from himself than everything within him is successively summoned to become God; and at the same time to become war.” (Gustave Thibon quoted by Paul Tournier in The Whole Person in a Broken World, p.23)

That war is real and has been raging ever since sin entered but it is nearing its climax. We have this hope and “this hope” will not disappoint us. (Rom. 5:5)

Reflective Introduction

It has been said that “A bit of carbon in iron makes powerful metal; a bit of truth in a lie makes powerful deceit.” It could also be said that a bit of self-exaltation mixed with bestowed wisdom and beauty can lead to self-destruction. Such is one insight from this week’s lesson. But let’s not stop there! What happens when a convicted sinner yields his or her heart in faith to the grace of a loving Savior? Can a leopard change his spots? Of course not, but the miracle comes when the sinner puts self aside and allows Christ to live inside. This inner controversy is the very same one that raged in Heaven leading to the expulsion of Lucifer. What he failed to learn in Heaven redeemed sinners are learning in a world raging with the expressed inner turmoil of a fallen angel:

Rom 7:21-25

21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord! (NIV)

Introduction to Ezekiel 28

The first 24 chapters contain a desperate, urgent message to the people of Israel who were about to face the stern judgment of God. Here Ezekiel explains why such judgment came upon God’s people. The next 8 chapters are prophecies of judgment regarding foreign nations warning them not to boast because of Israel’s demise. The same God who judged Israel for it failure will also judge these nations. The last 16 chapters begin with the overthrow of Jerusalem but move on to a message of hope to those who have survived a disaster that took them from their homeland, killed many of those they loved and destroyed their temple and capital city. Our study this week focuses on Ezekiel 28 – that section which focuses on foreign nations warning them not boast at the fall of Jerusalem – if they do their day would be coming too. A city in one of those countries, Tyre of Phoenicia, was apparently boasting. The first part of the chapter speaks of the king who apparently thought of himself as a god. However, the second part of the chapter is a digression the real power behind the boastful, arrogant and cruel actions of these nations. Here we find the attributes of the defiant Lucifer (the shining one who became Satan, the adversary) With this as a brief overview let’s begin with our first question:

Ezek 28:15

15 You were blameless in your ways

from the day you were created

till wickedness was found in you. (NIV)

Ellen White begins her five volumes we refer to as “Conflict of The Ages” series with these words, “God is love.” 1 John 4:16 (Patriarch and Prophets, p.33) With this concept she lays down the history of God’s perfect creation and the ensuing fall caused by sin. This raises the question: If God could create a perfect physical world why could he create a perfect “moral” world. Or did He? Was the world a perfect moral world? If so was it really perfect? Does God’s perfection allow for imperfection?

So long as all created beings acknowledged the allegiance of love, there was perfect harmony throughout the universe of God. It was the joy of the heavenly host to fulfill the purpose of their Creator. They delighted in reflecting His glory and showing forth His praise. And while love to God was supreme, love for one another was confiding and unselfish. There was no note of discord to mar the celestial harmonies. But a change came over this happy state. There was one who perverted the freedom that God had granted to His creatures. Sin originated with him who, next to Christ, had been most honored of God and was highest in power and glory among the inhabitants of heaven. Lucifer, "son of the morning," was first of the covering cherubs, holy and undefiled. He stood in the presence of the great Creator, and the ceaseless beams of glory enshrouding the eternal God rested upon him. (Patriarchs and Prophets, p.35)

2. Sin entered when the gift was valued over the Giver. (Ezek 28:17; Deut. 8:11-14) True

Ezek 28:17

17 Your heart became proud

on account of your beauty,

and you corrupted your wisdom

because of your splendor. (NIV)

This “beauty” is described in v.13

Ezek 28:13-14

13 You were in Eden,

the garden of God;

every precious stone adorned you:

ruby, topaz and emerald,

chrysolite, onyx and jasper,

sapphire, turquoise and beryl.

Your settings and mountings were made of gold;

on the day you were created they were prepared.

14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub,

for so I ordained you.

You were on the holy mount of God;

you walked among the fiery stones. (NIV)

The beauty of Lucifer was directly related to the gift God had given him but instead of praising the Giver he couldn’t get his eyes off what had been given. Pride grew because he valued the gift more than the Giver. How common is that today – at your work place, your home, your school, out society?

3. Forgetfulness is a sin problem. (Deut. 8:11-18) True

Deut 8:10-14

10 When you have eaten and are satisfied, praise the LORD your God for the good land he has given you. 11 Be careful that you do not forget the LORD your God, failing to observe his commands, his laws and his decrees that I am giving you this day. 12 Otherwise, when you eat and are satisfied, when you build fine houses and settle down, 13 and when your herds and flocks grow large and your silver and gold increase and all you have is multiplied, 14 then your heart will become proud and you will forget the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

Deut 8:17-18

17 You may say to yourself, "My power and the strength of my hands have produced this wealth for me." 18 But remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your forefathers, as it is today.

What is the difference between the owner of the property and the manager who manages the property for the owner? What role was give to Adam and Eve in Eden? After sin?

Which of the following is a “curse” because of sin (See:

a. The snake crawling on its belly

b. The woman while giving birth

c. The man while toiling in the field

If we aren’t careful we will position God cursing not only Satan but also those created in His image. Here is a sequel to think about:

Gen. 1 establishes the basis for our trust and confidence in God – God is our Creator and before we even sense a need it has been supplied.

Gen. 2 introduces us to the Creator God as LORD or Yahweh. This is our introduction to our God of relationships. We sometimes refer to this as the God of covenants but more importantly it is the God who desires a unique relationship with His created! A genuine relationship is the very thing He wanted to establish in Heaven.

Gen.3 introduces us to the “Fall of Man” but that’s not all. The Creator God, the God of relationships, goes to those who have fallen not with the purpose of condemning but with the purpose of restoring. He asks the critical question, the question that He must have asked of Lucifer long before, “Where are you?” Are you with Me or against Me? And with this question it becomes obvious that sin had begun to do its ugly work. The last half of Gen.3 shows God intervening to restore the broken relationship experienced by His beloved creation. He does so by putting enmity between the rebel from Heaven and Adam and Eve. In this context the pain of child birth and the pain of toiling in the fields are not curses but part of the bigger plan to restore. Sin’s glamour is taken away. Rebellion is seen for what it does. The snake and the ground may be cursed but not Adam or Eve. They become the objects of God’s supreme acts of restoration. We must be careful that we don’t become the voice for the snake calling God’s love a curse. Pain can be a gift and if you don’t believe that then think again of the terrible effects when pain for the leper is no longer felt.

Gen. 4 like Gen. 3 continues the relationship that God desires us to have with others – in stark contrast to the kind of relationship Satan established with the third of the angels of Heaven. With the blood on Cain’s hand God asks what is meant to be a redemptive question: “Where is your brother?” Cain’s answer is evasive just as Satan’s must have been while leading the rebellion in Heaven: “Am I my brother’s keeper?” His answer is evasive. Five times the word brother is used and it is this relationship with others that God is addressing but Satan attempts to divert the attention and in so doing reveals his own motive – “keeper”. A keeper is a controller which is exactly what Satan had been doing. Cain failed because he had not been a brother but instead had been a “keeper” or “controller” of his own brother.

So here we see in the story of Adam and Eve and then in the experience of Cain and Able the play out of the dynamics of what had happened during the rebellion in Heaven! When Cain realizes the consequences of his own rebellion he shrieks out with what must have been the very thoughts of Lucifer: “Today you are driving me from the land, and I will be hidden from your presence;” The worst punishment possible is to be separated from God—the consequence of cherishing the gift over the Giver. Forgetfulness of God and all that He has done for us is both the root cause and the result of a diverted focus which is what sin ultimately does.

4. The privilege of serving God is always a humbling experience. (Ezek. 28:14,17) False

Not so with Lucifer!

True and False

It is not natural because we were not created to be self-centered. It is natural for the sinful heart to take the place of or be equal to Giver.

Isa 14:12-14

12 How you have fallen from heaven,

O morning star, son of the dawn!

You have been cast down to the earth,

you who once laid low the nations!

13 You said in your heart,

"I will ascend to heaven;

I will raise my throne

above the stars of God;

I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly,

on the utmost heights of the sacred mountain.

14 I will ascend above the tops of the clouds;

I will make myself like the Most High." (NIV)

“While Lucifer counted it a thing to be grasped to be equal with God, Christ, the Exalted One, "made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross." Phil. 2:7, 8. Now the cross was just before Him; and His own disciples were so filled with self-seeking--the very principle of Satan’s kingdom--that they could not enter into sympathy with their Lord, or even understand Him as He spoke of His humiliation for them. “The Desire of Ages, p.436.

Reflective Conclusion

The theme for this quarter’s Sabbath School lessons is entitled “Garments of Grace”. This week we studied the pathway that leads from being exalted to being cast down. Lucifer had been covered by the hand that had created him. His beauty and wisdom were gifts from a God that loved and cherished him. Yet he became so infatuated with himself that he failed to distinguish between the Giver and the gift. Soon the Giver was perceived to be an obstacle to his getting even more. Pride, self-exaltation and absorption with self were the stepping stones which led and continue to lead away from the throne room of God. On the other we find both the journey and the destination of Jesus to be in stark contrast. Such is the choice facing each person:

Phil 2:3-11

3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature God,did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing,taking the very nature of a servant,being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death- even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Freedom from Addictions

Introduction

The word “addiction” conjures up in our minds many images such as druggies with syringes or alcoholics with bottles of wine. While these connections are understandable, we would like to suggest that they are short-sighted and even misleading. If I mention the word “car” do you automatically think of “flat tires”? Individuals with addictions are first people whom God loves and then they have an addiction. Unless we have walked where others have walked it is very easy to see the worst rather than the possibilities each person has. I would like to suggest that we begin our study and reflection on the subject of “Freedom from Addictions” with 1 Cor. 9:26,27 (Message)

1Co 9:19 Even though I am free of the demands and expectations of everyone, I have voluntarily become a servant to any and all in order to reach a wide range of people:

1Co 9:20 religious, nonreligious,

1Co 9:21 meticulous moralists, loose-living immoralists,

1Co 9:22 the defeated, the demoralized--whoever. I didn't take on their way of life. I kept my bearings in Christ--but I entered their world and tried to experience things from their point of view. I've become just about every sort of servant there is in my attempts to lead those I meet into a God-saved life.

1Co 9:23 I did all this because of the Message. I didn't just want to talk about it; I wanted to be in on it!

1Co 9:24 You've all been to the stadium and seen the athletes race. Everyone runs; one wins. Run to win.

1Co 9:25 All good athletes train hard. They do it for a gold medal that tarnishes and fades. You're after one that's gold eternally.

1Co 9:26 I don't know about you, but I'm running hard for the finish line. I'm giving it everything I've got. No sloppy living for me!

1Co 9:27 I'm staying alert and in top condition. I'm not going to get caught napping, telling everyone else all about it and then missing out myself.

Verse 22 is important. Without partaking of the lifestyle of those around him, Paul sought to first understand others – being sensitive to how did they get to where they are. Verses 26 and 27 remind us that everyone is in the race and a race doesn’t mean the person wins all the time. Some will stumble but they are still in the race. Ellen White makes it clear that “The Christian life is a battle and a march.” Neither a victory nor a stumble takes one out of the race. By definition an addict is someone who “devotes or surrenders (them self) to something habitually or obsessively. The battle in the race is to whom and to what one surrenders.

Reflective Questions

1. The Church should recognize that addicts of any kind are really beyond the kind of help it can offer. False

There are so many examples in Scripture of those who were reclaimed after what seemed to be a hopeless situation. Luke 15 speaks of the lost coin, the lost sheep and the lost son all reclaimed and illustrative of the power God has to save and what a surprise it was to some. If we ever get to the place where we think that any individual regardless of the “addiction” or sin is beyond the reach of God’s grace then we are the one with the bigger problem!

2. A little wine does not make an addict. True and False

Little can be gained in discussions about any addiction, as far as Christianity is concerned, without the sensitivity to “guarding the avenues to the soul.” For the Christian the issue is not just “health” but rather how whatever we think or do impacts our perception of and openness to spiritual things. See Proverbs 23:29-35. Note especially vss 33-35. A little wine or much wine would seem to violate the principle of caring for our bodies as the temple of God. (1 Cor. 6:19,20)

3. God invented sex. True (Matt 19:4-6)

That may be true but sin has taken that which is noble and holy and has attempted to turn it into something that actually leads away from rather than to God.

I met my first sex addict in my early administration. The person was a pastor who outlined for me the baby steps he had taken to lead him to seeing prostitutes and even worse. The agony he felt I will never forget. I still consider him a friend. The last I spoke with him he came to thank me for the stand I had taken and that he had become sober for a number of years. Yet he was quick to say that he was still an “addict” but now one under discipline and control.

4. It’s what you do not what you think that forms an addiction. False

Early inroads to immorality is often pornography which is now readily available. Pornography is often a link to sexual addiction both physiologically and mentally. It can destroy marriages but it can also destroy the individual. The example of Joseph when Potiphar’s wife attempted to seduce him saved not only him but his family and his calling to save the nation of Egypt. That’s what sin does. It is a block to the very potential that God has placed within that person. If only the counsel of Philippians 4:8 were followed.

5. After returning a faithful tithe the rest is yours to do as you please. False

Note 1 Cor. 10:31 – “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Concluding Reflection

It has been said that we are each of us the product of those who loved us or who have refused to love us. What is missing in this modern proverb is what God sees despite our weaknesses, failures and addictions. The Father of the prodigal ran to meet his “addicted” son and the Shepherd went in search of the one lost sheep. Both metaphors underscore God’s willingness to reclaim us from whatever is holding us back. Sin is terrible not because some abstract law has been broken but because an estrangement has taken place between us and God.

Perhaps no passage describes the inner turmoil of an addict wishing to break the hold of his or her addiction nor the joy when there is freedom from addictions as clearly as that described by Paul in Romans 7:21 -8:9

Rom 7:16 So if I can't be trusted to figure out what is best for myself and then do it, it becomes obvious that God's command is necessary.

Rom 7:17 But I need something more! For if I know the law but still can't keep it, and if the power of sin within me keeps sabotaging my best intentions, I obviously need help!

There is hope beyond the addiction. Little room is left for judgment but there is a lot of room left for understanding and encouragement.
